Grace Community is a church plant from Christ Point Church. Christ Point’s leadership was looking at establishing a ministry in Flour Bluff. Jess Cole, who was senior pastor there, felt God’s call to step down and lead this new church in the Flour Bluff area. Jackie Cole became the worship leader and Ruth Gonzales became our children's minister. Both are still serving in those ministries. Grace Community began meeting in the Flour Bluff Conference Center in 2011 for 9 months and then moved into a space by Gulf Coast Marine (fondly called the boat barn) in October 2011. In 2013, we purchased our current property at 1514 Flour Bluff Dr. and moved in October 6, 2013. There was a small church building and house on the property and we met in those buildings for a year while our new Worship Center was being built.
In the summer of 2014, Brandon Cunningham came on staff as our associate pastor. We celebrated the grand opening of our new worship center and classrooms in October 19, 2014.
In the Fall of 2015, we began construction on our new children's wing and moved into it on February 7, 2016. As the church continued grow, Tori Sherman came on staff as our youth minister in June of 2017. Then in the summer of 2018, we began a new building project to almost double the seating capacity of our worship center and to add a youth center, offices, more parking and another classroom. We moved into the new addition on April 14, 2019 and now have room to continue to reach more people for Christ.
Jess Cole has been a pastor for over 34 years. He was Senior Pastor of Padre Island Baptist Church for 16 years (1985-2001). He then started Christ Community Church in Corpus Christi, which became Christ Point Church, and was Senior Pastor there for 9 years. When Christ Point Church decided to plant Grace Community, Jess left there and became it’s pastor in January 2011.
Jess was born and raised in Corpus Christi and graduated from Calallen High School. He received his BA in Bible Studies from Howard Payne University, and Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Jess is married to Jackie Cole, who is a chiropractor and owns Cole Chiropractic Clinic in Flour Bluff. Jackie also leads the worship team at Grace. They have a son, Seth, who is a sophomore at Flour Bluff High School. Jess loves to play golf, the Dallas Cowboys and spending time with his family. (Not necessarily in that order, only sometimes.)
Brandon Cunningham is the Associate Pastor and focuses on teaching bible study and supporting the growth and outreach of the church. Brandon is married to Renee’ and they have 5 children and 3 grandchildren. They are a blended family. Brandon is the only member of the family that did not attend and graduate from Flour Bluff. They also share two beautiful miniature schnauzers named Reagan and Tator.
Brandon was born in Paris Texas and moved to Corpus Christi twenty five years ago to finish his degree at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Renee’ serves along side him overseeing the volunteers, assisting with Children’s ministry and Greeting ministry.
Brandon has a passion for bible study and raising leaders to reach the lost. This passion is being used to transform our church into one that reaches different ages, incomes and cultures. In his spare time he enjoys kayaking, travel, and reading. He also enjoys running and has completed two triathlons.
Tori Sherman joined the pastoral staff at Grace Community Church in June 2017. She is married to Jonathon Sherman, and they have two dogs, Muffy and Sophie. Tori was born in Fort Worth Texas, but spent most of her youth in Corpus Christi Texas. In May of 2017 she graduated from Abilene Christian University with a degree in Youth and Family Ministry. Tori is currently pursuing her Masters of Divinity at Logsdon Seminary.
Tori is a gifted leader and has a heart for youth. In her spare time she loves to go to the beach, travel, and spend time outdoors. She also enjoys music and spending time with friends and family.
Ruth serves the children’s ministry at Grace Community Church. She is married to Roy Gonzales and has four children, all of whom are young adults. They have an amazing daughter-in-law with their first grandson. They love being grandma and grandpa.
Ruth and Roy have lived in Corpus Christi their entire lives. Ruth started volunteering in children’s ministry almost 20 years ago. God blessed her with the heart for serving the young. In helping them learn about our amazing Jesus, she continues to learn as well. Serving the children brings her great joy and she loves them deeply.
